How Does Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Work?

TMS Therapy stimulates areas of the brain that cause depression. Our expert staff aid you to ensure your treatment is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

What Parts of the Brain Does TMS Affect?

Unlike medications that affect the whole body, TMS targets only the brain.

When an individual is affected by depression this means that a part of the brain is underactive. TMS aims to stimulate the brain to provide mood regulation and improve symptoms.

What Does TMS Feel Like?

People usually report that TMS feels like a tapping sensation on their scalp. Nothing is touching your scalp in reality; it is just a sensation caused by the magnetic pulses.

The great thing about TMS is that you can go about your day after your treatment as it doesn’t cause any disturbance to your alertness or memory.

Little to No Side Effects

Contrary to the side effects of medication which include nausea, dry mouth, insomnia, dizziness, fatigue, and sexual problems, TMS has little to no side effects.

TMS therapy is considered to be very safe. TMS is non-invasive, and there is no discomfort felt during the sessions. You remain awake the entire time, so there is no risk from anesthesia.

TMS usually has mild side effects, if any. You might experience headaches, or feel lightheaded during treatment.

Short Daily Treatment Sessions Working Around Your Schedule

Each TMS treatment typically lasts between 18 and 25 minutes. Treatment occurs while you are sitting comfortably in a chair.

Most patients enjoy listening to music, reading a book, or watching TV during treatment. TMS treatment does not affect our patients’ ability to perform normal daily activities.
