Discover Esketamine (Spravato™) : A New Horizon in Depression Treatment

Welcome to a breakthrough in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression. Spravato™ (esketamine) nasal spray offers a new hope and perspective for those who have not found relief with traditional treatments.

What to Expect with Esketamine Treatment

Spravato™ is specifically designed for patients with treatment-resistant depression, providing a new mechanism of action to target the symptoms of depression. Upon starting treatment, many patients report a significant improvement in their depressive symptoms, often noticing effects within the first 24 hours after their initial dose.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that Spravato™ can lead to rapid improvements in mood, mental status, and overall well-being, offering a chance at relief when other antidepressants haven’t been effective.

What Does a Treatment Course Look Like?

A Spravato™ treatment course begins with an induction phase, typically involving two treatments per week for the first month. This is followed by a maintenance phase, which may vary according to individual response but generally involves less frequent doses. Each treatment session is conducted under the supervision of a healthcare professional in a certified medical office, ensuring safety and providing immediate support if necessary.

Coverage is key

Esketamine (Spravato™) is covered by many major insurers including Medicare, Aetna, CDPHP and others. Please call our office to find our more information regarding coverage.

Where can I get esketamine treatment and therapy?

We offer Esketamine (Spravato™) nasal spray for depression and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) at our Clearwave Mental Health clinics. Esketamine (Spravato™) nasal spray must be given at a REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation System) certified center by a certified provider.

Understanding the Side Effects

What is a standard treatment length for Spravato™ (esketamine)?

Esketamine nasal spray treatment entails a structured regimen divided into three distinct phases: Phase 1 is administered two times per week over a course of four weeks. Phase 2 occurs once a week for a subsequent four weeks. Phase 3: Scheduling adjusts to once every one to two weeks.

Prior to each appointment, it’s important to avoid consuming any food for two hours and refrain from drinking significant amounts of liquid for 30 minutes. You will then self-administer Spravato™ (esketamine) under the guidance of our team. A minimum stay of two hours is required post-treatment. Please ensure arrangement for transportation home by a friend or family member.

What's the difference between ketamine and Spravato™ (esketamine)?

Spravato is a nasal spray formulation of esketamine, derived from the broader compound ketamine, specifically tailored for treating depression.

By focusing on the component of ketamine believed to be most effective in addressing depressive symptoms, Spravato excludes the sedative aspects of the drug, which are considered less critical for its therapeutic impact on depression.

Who should be using esketamine nasal spray?

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sanctioned the use of esketamine nasal spray as a treatment option for individuals with depression who haven’t seen sufficient results from traditional antidepressant therapies.

How much is a dose of esketamine nasal spray?

A dose of esketamine nasal spray will be either  2 or 3 sprays in your nostril depending on the required dose.

Is esketamine nasal spray covered by insurance?

Yes! It’s covered by many major insurance companies. Clearwave Mental Health’s team will work with you to maximize insurance coverage.

Is it possible to use Spravato™ (esketamine) nasal spray while continuing antidepressant medication?

Indeed, being on an antidepressant is a prerequisite for commencing treatment with esketamine nasal spray.

What are the contraindications for Spravato™ (esketamine)?

You should consult with a healthcare professional about whether or not esketamine treatment is the right path for you as there are some contraindications for ketamine treatment:

  • Aneurysmal Vascular Disease or Arteriovenous Malformation
  • History of intracerebral hemorrhage
  • Active Mania: Individuals experiencing active manic episodes should avoid ketamine treatment.
  • Uncontrolled Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Ketamine can raise blood pressure, so uncontrolled hypertension is a contraindication.
  • Clinically Significant Substance Abuse: Individuals with substance abuse issues should exercise caution with ketamine.
  • Pregnancy: Ketamine is generally not recommended during pregnancy.
  • Glaucoma and Recent Ocular Surgery: These conditions may interact with ketamine.
